As reported on the BBC, a large fire has been burning in the cemetery and the Fire Brigade have been here all day dealing with it. The fire is some distance from the monastery and our buildings and grounds are in no danger.
Early in the afternoon we noticed a helicopter overhead which was either spotting fires or monitoring traffic. Fire appliances have been at the cemetery since early afternoon and at least one is still here damping the fires down. The fires were not actually 'grass fires' as has been reported, but burn deep under the surface of the soil fed by the dry leaf mould which builds up over the years.
As of 8:30 pm today, the fires seem to be under control, but may still be burning underground in some places. A big thank you to the firefighters for their hard work.
